Thing 4: Why I Don’t Assign Homework

Posted by: | December 29, 2008 | 3 Comments |

In regard to the assigned readings, the one named “Why I Don’t Assign Homework” really resonated with me. Personally, I do not assign homework in my sixth grade history/social studies class except to finish whatever they were not able to finish in class. Therefore, the article was very encouraging for me to read because it validated the reasons I do not assign homework despite criticism I have received. First of all, the students who benefit from homework are the ones who do not actually need it. On the other hand, those who could benefit from the extra practice either do not complete the homework at all or rush through it just to finish it. In addition, in my opinion homework should not be anything that can be graded because there are too many parents who “help” their students complete their homework. Therefore, a grade would reflect the amount of help a child receives from his or her parents rather than the proficiency of the child in the specific subject matter. Finally, I believe students should be able to go home and spend quality time with their families in addition to whatever extracurricular activities they may be involved in. I do not support the idea that children should be expected to work all day at school and take home even more work to complete at home independently (at least in sixth grade).

I understand what you’re saying, but there must surely be some merit to giving an assignment. Even if it’s reading and answering one question, it gets them to think outside the classroom. It’s ok if the parent helps – this is how kids learn to learn. I have a problem with parents who do the work for their kid, but it’s ok to help them learn how to read and pull out information. I agree totally on not grading. While I don’t grade homework for the same reason as you, I find that there are just too many variables outside the classroom to really decide what a student comprehends totally on their own.

Meg – I agree with your response!! Why should a student go home and have to do hours and hours of homework. They should be able to spend time with their families. I am going to try and do this in my math class with practice problems. Whoever gets them done in class they do not have homework and if you fiddle around then you do have homework. I like what Mr. Meyers had to say.
